Plastic Vs The World
Following on from my last post about ‘being green’ I thought I’d share a little list of environmentally conscience products and methods that I've use at home and at work along with a list of products and methods that I’m yet to adopt. There are so many products and businesses out there making and doing great things that I couldn't possibly, do, know or list them all. If you have any recommendations I’d love to hear from you.
Sustainable products and methods I currently use at home -
Metal clothes pegs - I guess wooden ones would be awesome too.
Most of the time I have my water bottle with me and its either my metal one or my heavy duty drinking bottle
Compost kitchen scraps, some cardboard and old chicken straw + chicken poop.
Recycling all suitable paper, metal and plastic waste
Separate soft plastics from general rubbish
BYO metal trolly and loosely pack veg’s at Rocklea Markets
Use ‘Earth’ cleaning products
Keep glass jars for storage
Threading eye brows instead of waxing
Shop at second hand stores - I love Reverse Garbage & Op Shops
Installed rainwater tanks to irrigate the garden
Raising chickens to help manage kitchen scraps and receive bonus eggs!
Planted native tree’s and shrubs to encourage more biodiversity in my garden
Use the foliage plants in my garden in my floristry work
Use the council green waste bins for my garden cuttings and business green waste
Reduced meat consumption
Limit plastic toy purchases for my children
Find new uses for old things - rusty metal is my favourite medium!
Give unwanted clothes to friends and op shops
Sustainable products and methods that I use at work -
Wrap bouquets using tissue paper, kraft paper and twine - no cello wrapping!
Separate soft plastics from general rubbish
Refuse to use floral foam - hand tied bouquets or chickenwire arrangements
Purchase biodegradable alternative products for packaging
REAL flowers and foliage only. Silk / faux flowers = plastic
Support local farms first buy purchasing locally grown florists whenever possible
I don’t sell balloons, foil or latex.
Sustainable products and methods I'm yet to adopt;
Saying not to balloons to my kids - this is incredibly difficult as I have two children under 4. Once you become aware of balloons and their effect on kids you start to notice them everywhere and it’s a battle to divert their attention away from them. The battle continues!
Metal drink bottles for the whole family + not loosing them.
Cloth kitchen wipes instead of woven fibre ‘chuck’ wipes - although I do put old ones in the wash and reuse them!
Beeswax cloths as a cling wrap substitute - check out Mariel Rye
Natural shampoo’s and conditioners - I’m yet to test out the DIY shampoo recipe
Cloth nappies - the window for using them is slowing coming to a close as my nappy wearing bubba is 2 and to be honest this would be the one I’d struggle the most to adopt.
Start a worm farm to redirect kitchen scraps from landfill + worm castings are the bomb!
Fabric bags for the shopping - I half do this already but I need to step up my game.
Purchase organic veggies and meat exclusively
Grow (some of) my own veggies - this used to happen before having kiddos
Install solar panels
Those cool sanitary undies - Modibodi and Environmenstrual are both aussie.
I’d love a Tesla car but we all know thats not gonna happen
At the end of the day flower peeps, all anyone can do is their best with the information they have at the time. Never stop learning, am I right! And learning from our mistakes is the best kind of lesson because they are the ones that usually stick. I’m no anti-plastic warrior/saint, but I'm trying my best to limit my reliance on it. Happy Sunday to you.
